Fire Extinguishing

Fire Extinguishing
Fire extinguishers must be available in every workshop to extinguish the fire, Because it is necessary to stop the fire in the workshop due to electrical short-circuit or any other reason. Fire extinguishers and equipment should be installed in the workshop at a place where they can be used immediately. In addition to this, there should also be arrangements for buckets filled with sand, buckets filled with water, etc.

It is a device by which a fire can be extinguished by spraying liquid, gas or powder on burning objects, stopping the supply of oxygen to the burning object. The fluid, gas or powder sprinkled by it is not self-flammable nor helpful in combustion.

Types of Fire Extinguisher
Fire extinguishers are mainly of the following types

 1.Water-flled Fire Extinguisher

In this type of machine, water is filled with pressure. Pressing its lever produces a barrage of water, through which the fire is extinguished. The barrage of water stops as soon as the lever is released and thus the water is not unnecessarily spent. The two operating methods of a waterborne fire extinguisher are gas cartridges and stored pressure, respectively.

2.Foam Type Fire Extinguisher

This type of machine produces foam, along with a splash of water. To make lather, mineral oil, soap, etc. are mixed by mixing it with air pressure in water. On pressing the lever of the machine, water mixed foam is produced, which extinguishes the fire by stopping the oxygen supply of the burning object. This machine is mainly used to extinguish petrol fire, but electric fire But it cannot be used, because both foam and water are conductors of electricity. This device can be of gas cartridge or stored pressure type.

3. Dry Power Type Fire Extinguisher

In this type of machine, instead of water, the powder is filled with air pressure. This powder is not flammable nor helpful in combustion. Upon pressing the lever of the device, the powder extinguishes the fire by stopping the oxygen supply of the burning object. This device can also be of gas cartridge or stored pressure type.

4. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Type Fire Extinguisher

This type of device is filled with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) solution and a glass bottle contains dilute acid (dilute H2SO4). A metallic bolt is placed over the bottle in such a way that the glass bottle is broken by reversing the machine on the floor and the acid in the bottle comes in contact with sodium bicarbonate. Thus carbon d-oxide gas is rapidly produced as a result of chemical reaction in both the substances.
We can understand this process through the following chemical equation.

2NaHCO3  +  H2SO4  >  Na2SO4  + 2H2O  + 2CO2

Carbon dioxide is not helpful in the gas combustion process and thus it extinguishes the fire by stopping the oxygen supply of the burning objects. It is used to extinguish fires in electrical wires, appliances, etc.

5. Corbon Tetra-chloride (CCL4) Type Fire Extinguisher

In this type of device, a liquid called carbon tetrachloride (CCL4) or bromochloro-difluoro methane (BFC) is filled with air pressure. On pressing the lever of the machine, the spraying of air mixed fluid vapor starts. This device can generally be used to extinguish all types of fires. This fluid covers the burning object and immediately extinguishes the fire by stopping its oxygen supply. They are also called Helon type fire extinguishers. They are kept in open places due to the poisonous vapors generated by this machine. These types of fire extinguishers are particularly suitable and safe for use on electrical equipment.
